This is the first week I ever do a song/ album of the week. Originally this began as something I intended to update weekly on my home page but then I realized you can tell a lot about how a person and their interests change throughout time based on the music they listen to. Also I just thought it’d be fun for me to go back and see what I was listening to at various points in my life.
There’s always been songs that take me back either to a period in my life or to an exact moment and it’d be cool to keep track.
Whenever I listen to Because of the Internet by Childish Gambino I think of my spring semester junior year in high school. For some weird reason though, everytime I listen to “Hey There Delilah” I always visualize a 12-year-old Gaby waking up from a nap in the back row of the family car. We were taking one of our yearly summer trips to Mexico where we’d drive from Georgia to Guerrero. As I looked out the window I could see my dad fueling the car and realized we had stopped at a Flying J. I’ve always loved huge trucker gas stations so for me this was a major way to wake up from a nap. It was such a simple moment, but the whole family was together and the energy was just indescribable. We were all pumped to spend the summer in Mexico and were jumping to hop out of the car and already be in Tierra Caliente that I didn’t mind only being ten hours into a 33 hour drive.
The name for this category of posts originated from some of my favorite cousins always asking “Where the tunes at?” (If y’all are reading this, woah congrats my dudes literacy is no small feat, jk.)
Anyways, hopefully the songs and albums to come have moments and memories like the one above attached to them as well, if not I’ll at least be able to look back confidently at my musical choices. Or cringe, either way, these songs are bops to me at the moment.
